Academic Group 4 Revision Subjects Time Management Tips

Tips for Biology SL Paper 1

Perhaps one of the most recurring thoughts on a DP2 student who is taking Biology Standard Level revolves around Paper 1. Furthermore, most DP1 students are still getting the hang of Paper 1 and aim to have good preparation before exam season. Because of this, this article could be helpful for both groups of students. In general, this article targets tips to be well prepared for Biology SL Paper 1.

Study Techniques

Months/Weeks Before

Taking into consideration the dense volume of topics that must be reviewed before the test, it is recommended to start weeks, or even better, a couple of months before. This way, it becomes easier to distribute the topics that will be revised and face the test confidently.

Moreover, a great study technique is the Pomodoro Method. Although it might be pretty common among students, it can be essential when preparing for Paper 1 since it allows your brain to have rests between your study sessions and optimize your productivity for addressing big amounts of information.

On the other hand, take into account that the themes are distributed from letters A-D, and they correspond to 4 levels of organization, as it is shown below:

Because of this distribution,  I recommend you to study looking at the levels of organization and not the themes. For example, if you start with level of organization 1 “Molecules”, study this level on themes A-D, and do so with the rest of levels. This becomes helpful because each theme explores the different levels in different ways that relate with each other. That way, each study session evolves from memorizing information from a textbook, to actually understating what is being revised.

In addition, it is really important that you can broadly understand the diagrams and images from each topic. For example, the structure of glycoproteins, cells, molecules of water, karyograms, among others. In order to achieve this, written summaries and flash cards become key. These tools help to visualize each diagram and image as you study, along with easily making connections between them. It works specially with the “Molecules” and “Cells” levels since they are loaded with them.

Lastly, prioritize themes and levels that symbolize a challenge. That way, your energy can focus on improving from previous mistakes you made on other tests or while revising topics. Also, this can help you to get the best out of each study session! Once you cover these themes and levels, you can take a look at the topics that were already mastered.

Days Before

Days before the external papers are due, it is key to revise previous summaries and flash cards in depth. This means memorizing key concepts, studying diagrams, and understating topics thoroughly. Also, explain the topics to yourself out loud. This is the perfect opportunity to make sure you dominate each theme and topic and go over the important details within them.

Also, it is recommended to practice with past papers and the end of chapter questions from the IB Biology Course Companion. Specifically, focus on dominating methods such as discarding multiple choice options according to your knowledge for Section A, and data analysis plus mathematical formulas for Section B. This way you familiarize yourself with the test structure and know what to expect on the official exam.

Moreover, avoid procrastination and don’t take the days before exams to start revising your material but for practicing and finishing details. Start early!

Flash Card and Summary Organization

Flash Cards

Flash Cards are great for concepts, key words, mathematical formulas, diagrams and images. It wouldn’t be prudent to add really big pieces of information since it can become overwhelming to contemplate that much data on a small area.

In addition, flash cards allow you to centralize your attention on key data that can complement your bigger summaries and overall knowledge. In terms of in depth organization of the flash cards, it relies on each student. Nonetheless, I would recommend to divide each one in half: one for diagrams/drawings and the rest for formulas and key concepts. This way, you can have your information equally distributed.

Lastly, if you consider yourself a visual learner, you can divide the themes by color and apply it to your flash card. A well organized color code is great for memorizing!

Summary

In terms of broader summaries, these are good for big volumes of information. In contrast with the flash cards, they include paraphrases from the Biology Course Companion and notes from class. With this method, you can visualize the syllabus’ contents widely.

Moreover, when it comes to organization take into account what was explained with Image 1. Personally, when I had all my summaries done, I sorted them out according to the levels of organization and subdivided them into the themes. That way, as I studied them I could make connections between the levels distributed on each theme.

Finally, I suggest that you color code the levels of organization and not the themes. By this, your brain can remember the data that belonged to “Molecules”, “Cells”, “Organisms” and “Ecosystems” accordingly. Nonetheless, color coding the themes is also a great way to study if it is a better fit with your personal preferences.

Additional Tips

Additionally, other suggestions for acing your Biology External Paper 1 have to do with the completion of the test. Taking into account the given time for the test on SL is one hour and thirty minutes (90 minutes in total), I would suggest you divide your time in the first 50 minutes for the part you consider more challenging and the last 45 minutes on the least challenging section. Through this, you can dedicate a greater level of energy and focus on what can be an obstacle. Note that this may vary with the extension of each section within the official exam.

Last but definitely not least, be as calm, rested, and hydrated as possible. Being calm and administrating your emotions is imperative to avoid forgetting concepts and get the best out of your knowledge. Rest and hydration are fundamental to better results since it is easier for your brain to recall important information. Overall, trust in what you have studied and all the effort you put into it. Look at the test as a reward for all your hard work these past two years :).

Remember, you are totally capable of acing your Biology Paper 1!
