IB Spanish Language B speaking exams are usually deemed by many IB students to be the scariest. There is often lots of fear around the spontaneity and uncertainty of what is being examined.
As a DP2 student, here are some top tips from how I’ve been scoring highly in my Spanish IO practices.
1. First of all, you need to understand and familiarize yourself with what the IB is really marking. They are looking for 4 main things in your responses:
- Communication showing your ideas to be relevant, clear and meaningful.
- Language that demonstrates your range of grammar and vocabulary.
- Interaction through how you respond to questions. They are seeing how confident you are in your conversational skills.
- Pronunciation that indicates your fluency and avoids hindrances.
2. Learn vocabulary effectively:
One of the most common mistakes made by many Spanish B students is simply relying on memorising long vocabulary lists. Although knowing lots of vocabulary passively is good for comprehension, it can be harder to utilize it when communicating verbally.
Instead, learning your Spanish vocabulary by theme can make it relatively easier. In Spanish B, the 5 themes are: Identidades, Experiencias, Ingenio humano, Organización social and Compartir el planeta. Create theme based vocabulary sheets which include important nouns, verbs and opinion phrases. You can decide whether you would learn better doing this digitally or on paper. If you prefer digitally, you can already use pre-made vocab lists on platforms such as Quizlet which contain lots of vocabulary lists sorted by theme.
This is important as when you can talk about a theme confidently using varied vocabulary, it will enable you to talk about any related photo or answer any linked questions.
3. Integrate vocabulary of high-value:
In order to get the top marks for your Spanish IO, it’s important to use phrases and vocabulary that deepen your communication.
Here are some examples of high-value vocabulary:
- Connectives: además, sin embargo, por lo tanto
- Opinion verbs: considero, opino, creo
- Impact verbs: influir, afectar, causar
- Adjectives: beneficioso, perjudicial, importante
This will help you to sound more sophisticated and develop the ideas that you communicate in your Spanish IO.
4. Prepare some flexible speaking phrases:
This is perhaps the best tip for increasing your Spanish B IO confidence as the phrases can be adapted to any question.
Here are some examples you could use:
- En la imagen podemos ver…
- Un ejemplo de esto es…
- Esto puede tener un impacto positivo/negativo porque…
- En comparación con mi país…
If you get stuck on a response, these phrases help you fill time and reduce your panic during the exam. You can memorise these by writing them on sticky notes and placing them around your house and your study space.
5. Speak often and practice, even if you’re alone:
Whether it is describing a photo for 2 minutes, recording yourself and listening back, or even answering common IB questions aloud, practice will bring you confidence. Make sure to make this a regular habit as just 5-10 minutes a day can make a significant difference.
In conclusion, it’s important to take the steps needed to ensure you can sit your IB Spanish IO with confidence, gained through practice, revision and active recall.
We hope this helps you in your IO Speaking preparations. Remember, fluency and continuity matter, so confidence in your communication is valuable, even if you make a few mistakes.
