My MYP2 Experience: Managing Time and Workload

At the beginning of my second year in the IB Middle Years Programme, I thought I had MYP figured out. I had survived MYP1, so how much harder could it really be? I realized sooner than I had anticipated that it was stressful. As I started MYP2, I thought it would be somewhat similar to MYP1, since I was just starting to get on my feet. As such, I assumed that I would be able to handle the workload. However, I was wrong, and reality hit me pretty hard.

Balancing a Heavy Workload

As time went by, I had to juggle more and more assignments, projects, summatives, and loads of other tasks. Having multiple deadlines  already pile up alongside my monthly national ministry exams, which was not as easy to manage as I thought. I have learned that organization and time management is one of the most important things in MYP and that I should never wait until the last minute to start any given task.

Finding Effective Study Methods

Moreover, I’ve learned that it’s important to start assignments as soon as they’re given to me, to break down big assignments into smaller ones, and to complete them before the due date so that there’s an opportunity to review it before submitting. I found that the most efficient study methods for me were youtube videos, articles online, making studyboards, and mindmaps. I’d start with the hardest subjects then move on to the easier ones.

Overcoming Procrastination

Although I couldn’t always control my workload and deadlines, I’ve learned not to procrastinate on school tasks in general because it takes a lot of time and energy out of you, and it’s much easier to do them little by little rather than trying to pull an all nighter every time before the deadline. Additionally, I have started planning ahead, so that I can free up some time for myself instead of being stressed about upcoming assignments all the time.

What MYP2 Taught Me

Of course, during MYP2, I have also learned multiple things, both in general, outside of school, as well as specific to the MYP program. However, I think that the things related to managing the MYP workload are the most important lessons that I have learned during this year. Although at times it was overwhelming and stressful, I now feel accomplished and more responsible than before. Now I understand that managing my MYP workload isn’t about perfection, but about finding ways that suit me best and being able to accomplish as much as I can during the given time.

My Advice for Future MYP2 Students

Finally, based on my experience, my advice to someone who is just starting MYP2, would be to stay organized, start early and manage their time wisely, and if possible, never leave assignments until the last minute. Even though it might seem impossible at first, you will eventually learn how to manage your work as the year goes by.

Whether you’re starting MYP2 this year or just reflecting on it:

You’ve got this! Wishing you a great new school year!
