The main idea behind the Collaborative Science Project (CSP), a required part of the IB Group 4 Science practical program, is that students investigate a real issue and uncover the environmental, social, and ethical threads within it.
It aims to strengthen and develop your:
- Collaboration & Communication
Teams first learn to listen, share ideas, and coordinate effectively.
- Creativity & Resilience
With teamwork in place, students learn to meet unfamiliar, unpredictable problems with curiosity rather than frustration.
- Interdisciplinary Thinking
Teams connect ideas across subjects, since real problems don’t respect subject boundaries.
- Designing & Modelling Solutions
Those connections turn into practical, testable answers to local and global problems.
- Ethical & Global Awareness
Finally, teams weigh their solutions against wider ethical, environmental, economic, cultural, and social impacts.
How It Works
Planning & Preparations
Students are placed into interdisciplinary teams spanning Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and ESS. You will be introduced to the project theme, the approaches-to-learning skills expected, and the time and resource constraints you’ll work within. Your school will give more guidance on group specifics, such as size and preferred research method.
Executing the Collaborative Science Project
Teams research chosen real-world problems, drawing on sources and methods from each represented subject. This includes literature review and data analysis, with each discipline contributing its own strengths. Teams then produce written and oral components (a video, podcast, or scientific poster) presenting both their findings and their collaborative process to peers.
For example, my own experience included my IB cohort visiting a theme park, and we analysed how science works itself in that context, and we then made a short vlog video to show our findings. For example, one of my team members investigated the impact of gravity on the rollercoaster rides, and I investigated the use of solar power in the theme park. We did some research prior about the theme park, linked this to the areas of scientific investigation and then analysed this in our vlog. I had the fun job of editing the vlog! Conclusively, the Group 4 Project aims to mirror how science actually happens: collaboratively, across disciplines, with real consequences in view.
You then have to write a 100-word reflection based on your experiences. This can be hard as it’s such a small word limit, but if done strategically and intentionally, it is definitely possible.
Top Tips for Collaborative Science Project Reflections
As with most areas of IBDP, the reflection is an incredibly important aspect, both for your personal and collective development. Here are some guiding questions that my teachers provided to aid us in writing our reflections:
- Did your group’s research and lab report address the aims of the Group 4 Project? How?
- What was your role within the group?
- Give some examples of how your contribution could be described as collaborative
- To what extent has the Group 4 Project allowed you to learn more about your own strengths and weaknesses in a group, and how could you build on this in future collaborative projects?
The best reflections that fit this criteria are:
- Individual and genuine
- Talk about YOUR involvement
- Recognise any obstacles you overcame
- Reflect on opportunities for communication
- Did not just list what you did but elaborated on how it helped you grow as a scientist
Make sure your reflections are not:
- Just listing, but evaluating
- Solely about what you did but the process of doing it.
- Only examples of vague collaboration: We worked great together; ditch the “we”.
- Ignoring challenges: Pretending it went perfectly, no!
- Focusing on peers: This is about YOU and not a chance to critique your teammates.
